Origin and history

The museum of Boulogne-sur-Mer has its origins in the legacy of Alexandre Isidore Leroy de Barde, "First Painter of Natural History" by Louis XVIII. In 1825 he gave his cabinet of curiosities to the Société d'Agriculture et des Arts de Boulogne, provided that a museum was created. The municipal council purchased these collections on May 11, 1825, and the museum opened in the buildings of the former seminary of Grande Rue. This initial nucleus will be enriched by donations from local personalities such as Mariette, Pinart, Hamy, Lebeau and Enlart, as well as municipal acquisitions and state deposits.

Today, installed in the ancient 13th century Comtal Castle, the museum is distinguished by its various collections: archaeology, fine arts, decorative arts, and ethnology. His major assets include an Egyptian collection dedicated to funeral beliefs and embalming rites, as well as a remarkable series of 476 Greek vases (corinthians, attics, Etruscans), acquired in 1861. These ensembles, complemented by extra-European works (Alaska, Oceania) and paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, make it a must-have cultural place.

The museum also preserves medieval and Gallo-Roman archaeological remains, including the walls of Bononia Antiqua and objects related to the Classis Britannica. Its label "Musée de France" and its association with the Château d'Aumont underline its heritage importance. The collections reflect both local history and international contributions, thanks to explorers such as Pinart and scholars such as E. Hamy, who contributed to its influence in 1875.
