Origin and history
The Mussel Farming Museum, inaugurated in 1987 in Esnandes, highlights an emblematic activity of the Bay of Aiguillon: mussel breeding. Integrated with the houses of the Poitevin Marsh Natural Park, it offers an immersive journey through models, audiovisual animations and exhibitions detailing each stage of the mussel farming, from the capture of the seed to the marketing. The fragile ecosystem of the bay, shaped by tides and human activities, is also presented as an integral part of this local tradition.
This project was carried out by the municipality of Esnandes, under the leadership of its mayor, in order to preserve and enhance a craft know-how often unknown. The museum is part of a broader heritage approach aimed at raising public awareness of the Bay's environmental and economic issues. It benefits from the label Musée de France, guaranteeing the quality of its collections and its mediation. Its location, close to the village church, makes it a central place to discover the cultural and natural identity of the Poitevin Marsh.
The tools and techniques presented illustrate the evolution of a profession rooted in the territory for generations. The museum thus plays a key role in the transmission of this intangible heritage, while highlighting contemporary challenges related to the preservation of coastal ecosystems. Aiguillon Bay, a wetland of international importance, is described as a productive and vulnerable environment where human activity and biodiversity are closely linked.
