Origin and history

The castle of the Dukes of Bar, built in the 10th century on a dominant rocky spur Bar-le-Duc, was the residence of the Counts then Dukes of Bar and Lorraine. In the 15th century, René II added a large gallery and a Italian garden, while his wife, Philippe de Gueldre, set up residential spaces. In 1567, Duke Charles III built the Neuf-Castel, a flamboyant Gothic house housing the Chamber of Accounts. The site, dismantled in 1670 by order of Louis XIV, only preserves this building, the Tower of the Clock and remains of fortifications.

Transformed into a museum in 1970, the Neuf-Castel has been home to the collections of the Barrois Museum, founded in 1841 by architect Joseph-Théodore Oudet and Mayor Paulin Gillon. Originally housed in the Florainville hotel, the museum gathers paintings, lorrain sculptures (including works by Ligier Richier), archaeological objects of Nasium, and a Meusian military gallery. In 1936, Raymond Poincaré's donation enriched the funds. Closed since 2020 for work, it prepares a complete inventory and reserves to the standards of the Musées de France.

The site thus blends medieval and reborn heritage — like the vaulted Hall of the Treasure of Charters (XVth century, classified in 1981) — with eclectic collections, from Lorrain religious art to ethnographic artifacts. The chapel of Saint-Louis (1859), of neo-Gothic style, and the remains of the collegiate Saint-Maxe recall the religious importance of the place. The museum, labeled in 2003, illustrates the evolution of a ducal fortress into a cultural space, while preserving the memory of local elites and conflicts, such as the Thirty Years War.

The history of the castle reflects the political tensions of Lorraine: French occupation (1632–1661), fire of 1649, and dismantling under Louis XIV. In the 19th century, the city lay its monuments, destroying the collegiate church and converting the former Ducal Palace into a convent. The present museum, managed by the Community of Agglomeration since 2013, continues this dialogue between Ducal power, artistic heritage and regional identity, while integrating contemporary conservation issues.
