Origin and history
The Forge Museum, located in Montgailhard, Ariège, is located in the former Forges de Pyrène, an industrial site created during the French Revolution. Originally, this place housed an iron mill mentioned in the 15th century, before being transformed into a tile factory around 1860. The forges, bought by the department in 1987, were converted into a tourist and cultural centre highlighting the artisanal and mining heritage of the region.
The museum offers two distinct spaces: the Museum of Ancient Trades and the Museum of Iron. The first presents a collection of more than 125 trades and 6,500 tools, illustrating traditional know-how. The second retraces the history of the Ariege steel industry, from the extraction of ore to its transformation, through documents, tools and ancient objects. These spaces offer an immersion in local industrial and craft history.
The site of the Forges de Pyrène, labeled Musée de France, extends over 5 hectares and aims to enhance the natural and artisanal riches of Ariège. It is part of a process of preserving collective memory, highlighting the gestures and techniques of the artisans of the past, while attracting a family and tourist audience.
