Origin and history

The Angladon Museum - Collection Jacques Doucet is a museum located in Avignon, in the hotel of Massilian, a former 18th century mansion built in 1694 by architect Jean Péru. This hotel, occupied in the eighteenth century by the Massilian family, was bequeathed to the Angladon-Dubrujeaud Foundation at the same time as the art collection. It retains a period staircase and discreet decor elements in the living rooms on the first floor.

The museum was created in 1996 according to the wishes of Jean and Paulette Angladon-Dubrujeaud, heirs of the designer Jacques Doucet (1853-1929). The latter, founder of a Parisian haute-couture house, had built a large collection of works of art, ranging from the eighteenth century to the contemporary era, including paintings, drawings, furniture and art objects. He was also an active patron, supporting writers such as Louis Aragon, André Breton and Pierre Reverdy.

When Doucet died in 1929, his widow appointed Jean Dubrujeaud as heir, who in turn passed on the collection to his son, Jean Angladon-Dubrujeaud (1906-1979), painter and engraver. He and his wife Paulette enriched the collection with acquisitions and bequeathed the collection to the Angladon-Dubrujeaud Foundation, created in 1993. The museum was inaugurated on 15 November 1996 and is still managed by this foundation.

The museum's collection includes major works by Chardin, Degas, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Picasso and Modigliani, as well as stamped furniture and art objects. Jean Angladon and Paulette Martin also added medieval and renaissant works from 1968. An oriental cabinet exhibits ancient porcelains, reflecting Doucet's taste for 18th-century art.
