Henri Chapu - Sculptor
Artist in honour of the museum.
Origin and history
The Henri-Chapu Museum is a municipal museum dedicated entirely to the work of sculptor Henri Chapu. Located at the Mée-sur-Seine, in the Mee Village (or Vieux Mée) district, it is close to the old railway station and a park also named after the artist. This cultural place constantly exhibits models, sculptures and sketches of Chapu, providing a complete overview of its creative process. Temporary exhibitions are also organized, regularly enriching the cultural offer of the museum.
The museum offers free access to its collections, with the possibility of guided tours by appointment. Its opening hours are limited to Saturdays and Sundays, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It closes annually during August and on public holidays. This limited but free accessibility reflects a desire to preserve and share the local artistic heritage, while adapting to the management constraints of a municipal institution.
The choice to establish the museum at Mée-sur-Seine is not annoyed: it is part of a dynamic of valorizing the local heritage and memory of Henri Chapu, whose artistic influence transcends regional boundaries. The proximity to historical infrastructures such as the old station also highlights the link between art, industry and urban development in the 19th century, during which time Chapu marked the history of French sculpture.
