Origin and history

The Occitanie Regional Museum of Contemporary Art (MRAC) was established in 1991 in Sérignan, Herault. Originally named in tribute to Gustave Fayet, collector and patron of artists such as Gauguin and Redon, he occupied 200 m2. Enlarged in 1997 to 600 m2, it hosted four to five annual exhibitions, while supporting French and international artists.

In 2006, the town hall of Sérignan inaugurated a major extension, bringing the area to over 2,000 m2. The museum then became the regional museum of contemporary art Languedoc-Roussillon in 2010, under the management of the Occitanie region. It now offers spaces dedicated to graphic arts, exhibitions, and a permanent collection of 450 works in 2015.

A second 450 m2 expansion was carried out in 2016, including reserves, a redesigned bookshop, and a permanent work by Bruno Peinado on the facade. This project strengthened the link between the main building, marked by an installation by Daniel Buren, and a ceramic fresco by Icelandic artist Erró. MRAC remains a key player in the contemporary artistic scene in Occitanie.
