Origin and history

The Forcalquier Municipal Museum was founded in 1912 in the former Recollet convent, thanks to the joint initiative of Eugène Derbez, teacher, and Martial Sicard, mayor and historian. His collections, mainly from donations, cover fields as varied as fine arts, archaeology, or contemporary art. This project reflects the local commitment to preserve and enhance the region's cultural and historical heritage.

Today, the museum is animated by volunteers from the Forcalquier Country Heritage Association, who ensure its summer opening and collaborate with the cultural service to organize temporary exhibitions. The building, a former convent of the Visitandines, also houses the town hall, strengthening its anchor in municipal life. Accessible to people with reduced mobility, it stands out for its original collections, especially in contemporary art, while remaining a major witness to local life.

The topics discussed – from natural sciences to ethnology to history – illustrate the diversity of interests of donors and cultural actors in Forcalquier. The museum, labeled Musée de France, thus plays a key role in the transmission of collective memory and in the revitalization of the territory, between Alpes and Provence.
