Origin and history

The Souvigny Museum and Gardens is part of a major historical site in Bourbonnais, marked by its link to the Cluny Abbey. In 916 Aymar, ancestor of the Bourbons, offered land to Cluny, making Souvigny his "oldest daughter." The city became a spiritual and political centre, sheltering the burials of the Dukes of Bourbon and the abbots of Cluny, such as Saint Mayeul and Saint Odilon, whose relics were rediscovered in 2001-2002.

The Priorial Church, the largest religious building in Allier, preserves 15th century frescoes and a historic organ by François-Henri Clicquot (1783). The column of the Zodiac (12th century), exposed to the museum, symbolizes the artistic and religious influence of Souvigny. The site, classified among historical monuments, also attracts for its Romanesque heritage and gardens, in a preserved bocage.

Souvigny was the spiritual capital of the Bourbons, energized by the medieval pilgrimage. Today, the museum and the annual exhibitions value this past, while events such as the medieval fair (for 25 years) or the autumn musical days animate the commune. Green tourism and the rediscovery of Romanesque churches complete the attraction of the site.

The Priory Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, sanctuary of peace since 2017, and the remains of the Dukes of Bourbon castle recall the strategic importance of Souvigny. Archaeological excavations and the restoration of frescoes revealed forgotten treasures, such as the burials of the abbots or the decorations close to those of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château.

The city, crossed by the Queune, combines heritage and nature. His museum also exhibits a facsimile of the Bible in Souvigny, while the workshops of artisans (painters, sculptors) perpetuate local know-how. The history of Souvigny, between clunisian power and Bourbon lineage, makes it a key place of medieval Auvergne.
