Origin and history
The Museum of Initiation to Nature was founded by Dr. Ducombe to replace the former Caen Natural History Museum, destroyed during World War II. This project is part of a desire to preserve and transmit knowledge about the Norman natural heritage, while providing an educational space accessible to the public. The museum is now attached to the Permanent Centre of Environment Initiatives (CPIE) Orne Valley, strengthening its territorial anchor and educational role.
The museum focuses on discovering Normandy's landscapes, fauna and flora through interactive exhibitions. The "Landscapes of Normandy" room traces the evolution of local natural environments, while the "Becs, muzzles and Cie" room presents naturalized animals in their habitat. These facilities are designed to raise awareness among visitors, including young audiences, of regional biodiversity and environmental issues.
Although located near the Old Abbey of Men, founded by William the Conqueror, the museum has no direct historical link to this monument. His official address, the Esplanade Jean-Marie Louvel in Caen (Calvados), and his label Musée de France underline his cultural and scientific importance in Normandy. Approximate location, noted as "passible" in the sources, suggests geographic details to be refined.
