Origin and history
The Massey Museum finds its origin in the legacy of a rare garden and a home by its owner, Massey, in the City of Tarbes. This donation allowed the progressive development of a public space, supplemented by Jubinal's collections, at the initiative of the creation of a museum. The first, very diversified acquisitions were enriched over time by conservatives, with state support, through purchases and deposits.
The building, designed by the Tarbese architect Jean-Jacques Latour, initially consisted of two residential floors and an observation tower. Expansion works respected its original harmony. After a complete renovation, the museum reopened in 2012, highlighting two major collections: fine arts and a unique section dedicated to hussards.
The Hussars collection, organized chronologically from 1545 to 1945, presents 130 models, uniforms from 30 countries, as well as drawings and paintings. Multimedia tools place these objects in their historical context. The museum, labeled Musée de France, combines architectural heritage, art and military history in the heart of Massey Garden.
