Origin and history

The Estrine Museum is housed in the Hotel Estrine, a building built in 1749, a remarkable example of 18th century Provencal architecture. This historic place was the residence of representatives of the Princes of Monaco, lords of Saint-Rémy since Louis XIII. In 1986, he received the Prix du Patrimoine vivant de la Fondation de France, highlighting his heritage importance. Recent developments have made it possible to integrate spaces dedicated to temporary exhibitions, cultural mediation (workshops, conferences) and an Interpretation Centre dedicated to Vincent van Gogh, while guaranteeing access for people with reduced mobility.

The museum's collections have been formed mainly through donations from artists who have exhibited in its walls since its opening in 1989, as well as the contributions of patrons and the institution's own acquisitions. The permanent collection highlights works from the 20th and 21st centuries, with a particular focus on artists related to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, such as Albert Gleizes (more than 30 works) and André Marchand (about 130 works). An important place is also given to provencal painters, particularly those from the Pays d'Arles, as well as to figurative or politically engaged artists, often unknown.

The museum is distinguished by its dual heritage: that of an aristocratic hotel linked to the Monegasque history of the region, and that of a space dedicated to modern art, where dialogue between local works and major references like Van Gogh. The institution plays a key role in the development of Provencal artistic heritage, by crossing local history and contemporary creations.
