Origin and history
The Musée du Terroir, located in La Chapelle-Thècle, was founded in 1924, making it one of the oldest museums of art and popular traditions open to the public in France. Its rich and varied collections include local archaeological pieces, ethnological objects, as well as tools and techniques related to breeding. This heritage reflects everyday life and regional know-how, with particular attention to traditional crafts and costumes.
The museum is divided into two thematic spaces: one room reconstructs a bourgeois interior of the 19th century, while another one is dedicated to archaeology. In addition, it also houses the Musée de la Poultry, which highlights the iconic history of Bresse's poultry, a renowned local product. These collections cover a variety of fields, ranging from prehistory to agro-food techniques, military weapons and craft tools.
Although located in La Chapelle-Thècle, the sources indicate an administrative address in Romenay, in the department of Saône-et-Loire (71). The museum benefits from the label Musée de France, highlighting its heritage importance. Its location, rated as fair (5/10), and its website (ecomusee-bresse71.fr) make it an accessible place to discover local and regional history.
