Origin and history

The Musée des métiers de la pierre et de la vie rurale was born in 1991 on the initiative of inhabitants of Saint-Beauzely, concerned with preserving local know-how related to sandstone extraction, Templar cities (such as La Couvertoirade) and agriculture. First managed by the Syndicat d'Initiative, in 1994 it became an independent association, Les Amis du Musée Mémoire de la Vie Rurale, which oversees its growth. The castle, formerly a seigneurial residence and then a school run by nuns (1853–1961), now houses more than 5,000 objects, compared to 200 at the opening.

The museum is organized around key themes: the stone trades (tools of the 15th century carriages, masons of the monuments of South Aveyron), rural life (reconstitution of a 19th century fireplace, a forge and a stable), and traditional agriculture (herses, ploughs, yokes). Among the remarkable pieces are a trinqueballe (carrying trunks) and collections of masons and yokes tools. Open from April to October, it also offers temporary exhibitions on local heritage.

Integrated with the Route des Seigneurs du Rouergue since 1996 and associated with the Musée du Rouergue, the site values a unique artisanal and rural heritage. The castle, symbol of the attractiveness of Saint-Beauzély, combines historical memory (with its many past uses) and current cultural dynamism, also welcoming the village's festive hall. Its territorial anchoring is strengthened by the proximity of sites classified as the Basiol Sanctuary or the priory of Comberoumal.
