Origin and history

La Croix du Born, erected in 1739, is an emblematic monument of the commune of Born. This type of cross, often located at crossroads or in village centres, served as a spiritual and social landmark for the inhabitants. Its dated inscription makes it possible to situate it precisely in time, although the exact circumstances of its construction remain poorly known.

In the context of 18th-century Occitanie, the cross of road or village played a central role in everyday life. They marked places of assembly, prayer or commemoration, reflecting popular piety and community organization around religious symbols. These monuments were also landmarks for travellers and pilgrims, integrated into the rural landscape.
