Tumular necropolis (Box ZD 05): registration by order of 26 July 1993

Origin and history

The Tumular Necropolis of Conliège is an archaeological site composed of several tumulus, located in the municipality of Conliège, in the Jura department. This type of funeral monument, characteristic of the Iron Age, bears witness to the burial practices of the local elites of that time. The ensemble has been listed as historical monuments since 26 July 1993, recognizing its heritage and archaeological value.

The tumulus of Conliège are associated with a princely necropolis of the 6th and 5th centuries B.C.E. These monumental burials, often reserved for a warrior or religious aristocracy, reflect a hierarchical social organization. Their presence in this region, then marked by cultural exchanges between Celtic peoples and Mediterranean influences, underlines the strategic importance of the Jurassian territory during the Protohistory.

Today, the site belongs to the municipality of Conliège and remains an object of study for archaeologists. Its classification among historical monuments allows to preserve these remains, while offering a material testimony of funeral rites and political structures of the Iron Age in Franche-Comté. The approximate location and the absence of recent limited excavations, however, make its interpretation partial, inviting further research.
