Niche with statue and oil lantern at the corner of the two streets: inscription by decree of 12 July 1945
Origin and history
The niche with statue and oil lantern of Mende is a remarkable Gallo-Roman vestige, integrated at the corner of Fournet and Saint-Privat streets. This monument consists of a carpentry structure applied to the wall, consisting of two pillars and a vaulted opening. A moving oil lamp, suspended laterally, could be operated via a climb and descent system protected by a housing. This device evokes the Lucerna, ancient lanterns used for public or religious lighting.
The niche houses a statue of Notre-Dame de Bon Secours, a posterior addition that reflects the Christian reappropriation of the site. Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 12 July 1945, this ensemble illustrates the superposition of the epochs: a Gallo-Roman utility object transformed into a medium of medieval or modern devotion. Its urban location, in the heart of Mende (Lozère), suggests a function both practical (lighting) and symbolic in public space.
The available data do not specify the exact use of lantern in Gallo-Roman times, but its sophisticated mechanism — mobile and protected — indicates particular importance. The approximate location (note 5/10) and the absence of detailed archaeological sources limit the understanding of its original context. The Creative Commons Licensed Photos (MOSSOT Credit) document its current state, while the Merimée Base confirms its listing as historical monuments.
