Niche with statue, at the corner of the two streets: inscription by decree of 12 October 1946

Origin and history

The niche with statue of Rue Barbès in Beaucaire is a preserved architectural element, located on the first floor of an old house. Its support, consisting of a rounded bandeau, is adorned with a bearded head and acanthe leaves, while the dais that overcomes it, very worked, is crowned with a flowerpot. These stylistic details suggest a careful realization, typical of the urban decorations of the classical or neo-classical periods, although the statue itself appears after the niche.

The niche was classified as a Historic Monument by order of 12 October 1946, reflecting its heritage value. Its location at the corner of Barbès and Bijoutiers streets, in the historic centre of Beaucaire, highlights its integration into the ancient urban fabric. The stylistic disparity between the niche and the statue could indicate subsequent restorations or additions, common practices for decorative elements of the facades.

Beaucaire, a town located in the Gard en Occitanie, has had a history marked by its role as a commercial and strategic place between Provence and Languedoc. The niches and statues adorning the facades were often prestige markers for the owners, reflecting their social status or piety. These decorative elements also helped to enhance public space, while sometimes serving as visual cues in dense urban fabric.

Today, this niche remains a testimony of local architectural practices, although its state of conservation and exact location (noted as "passible" in terms of accuracy) may limit its accessibility or visibility. Its classification among the Historical Monuments nevertheless ensures its protection and highlights its importance in the built heritage of Beaucaire.
