Origin and history
The niche with statue of Beaucaire is a historic monument located in the city centre, at the corner of Rue des Trois-Pigeons and Place de la République. It houses a representation of Saint John the Baptist, a major religious figure of Christianity, often associated with baptisms and popular devotion. This type of church, frequent in medieval or modern cities, served both as an urban landmark and as a support for public piety.
Classified by ministerial decree in 1946, this niche illustrates the importance of religious heritage in the communes of southern France. Statues in elevation, like this one, were often placed at intersections or on squares to bless passersby or mark a gathering place. Their presence also reflects the Church's influence in the public space before the progressive secularization of European societies.
In Beaucaire, a city marked by its medieval history and its commercial role between Rhône and the Mediterranean, such monuments recall the link between faith, urban planning and community life.
