Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame de l'île Barbe, located in the 9th arrondissement of Lyon, is one of the few preserved remains of the Benedictine Abbey founded on this island from the 5th century. The present building, built between the 11th and 12th centuries by the monks, bears witness to Romanesque religious architecture. Its bell tower, choir and north wall date from the late 11th century, while the partially preserved cloister was erected in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 17 December 1993, the church also protects the north and west galleries of the former cloister. These elements, associated with the so-called Le Chatelard building, recall the spiritual and heritage importance of the site. Barbe Island, the cradle of Lyon Christianity, was home to a monastic community whose influence extended far beyond the region.

Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its role as the main vestige of the original abbey. Although GPS coordinates place the address at 4 Place Notre-Dame de l'Île Barbe (69009 Lyon), its classification specifically covers the church and the remains of the cloister, marking its anchor in Lyon's religious history.
