Church: Registration by decree of 27 June 1925
Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame d'Agonges is a 12th century religious building located in the commune of Agonges, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its typical architecture of Romanesque art is characterized by a nave with transept finished with apsides, choir walls adorned with archatures in mitre, and a cradle vault supported by doubles resting on columns. The bell tower, raised on three floors, has a blind lower seat, reinforcing its massive and sober appearance.
The church is considered a successful model of a rural Romanesque church in the country of Souvigny, illustrating the importance of religious buildings in medieval countryside. Its design and decorative elements reflect the influence of Burgundy Romanesque art, while adapting to local constraints. The building thus bears witness to the architectural and spiritual vitality of the region in the twelfth century.
Ranked among historic monuments since June 27, 1925, the Church of Notre-Dame d'Agonges enjoys heritage protection that underscores its historical and artistic value. This status preserves its original features, including its arches, vault and bell tower, which make it a remarkable example of rural Romanesque heritage. The precise location of the building, at 4 Place de l'Eglise in Agonges, facilitates access and visit.
The church belongs to the commune of Agonges, as indicated by the Merimée base, and its Insee code (03002) links it administratively to the arrondissement of Moulins. Although the sources do not specify its current use (cult, visits, events), its listing as historical monuments guarantees its conservation for future generations. Available photographs, such as those of Modillons58 licensed under Creative Commons, document its state and architectural details.
