Origin and history
Notre-Dame d'Amfreville-sur-Iton Church, located in the department of Eure in Normandy, is a religious building built between the 12th and 16th centuries. The nave, of Romanesque architecture, dates from the first half of the 12th century, while the choir and bell tower, of Renaissance style, were erected at the beginning of the 16th century. Around 1530, a seigneurial chapel dedicated to the Pommereuil family was added, illustrating the local importance of this lineage.
In 1782 the damaged bell tower was repaired by the French architect Jacques Charles Delalande, an intervention attesting to the desire to preserve the building. The church was officially recognized for its heritage value in 1955, when it was listed as historic monuments. This status protects the entire building, owned by the municipality, and underlines its role in the religious and architectural history of the region.
The building thus blends medieval and Renaissance elements, reflecting stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs over nearly five centuries. Its bell tower, nave and seigneurial chapel bear a remarkable witness to the Norman heritage, anchored in the landscape of Amfreville-sur-Iton. The 1955 protection guarantees the transmission of this heritage to future generations.
