Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Beaugency, located in the Loiret department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a former abbey founded around 1030 by the seigneurs of Beaugency. Its current architecture dates mainly from the 12th century, with major restorations in the 17th and 19th centuries. Ranked a historic monument in 1862, it illustrates the evolution of religious styles and the importance of medieval abbeys in the Loire Valley, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The abbey, originally dedicated to regular canons under the rule of Saint Augustine, was reformed by Yves de Chartres around 1100. The construction of the present church began around 1140, after Raoul I of Beaugency restored their property to the canons. The building suffered a fire in 1567-1568 during religious conflicts, then was restored in 1642 by the Reverend Father of Faure, with wooden vaults and a characteristic walkway.

After the Revolution, the church became parish, replacing the old churches of Saint-Firmin and Saint-Nicolas destroyed. In the 19th century, the chapel Sainte-Anne was added (1874-1876) by architect René Dusserre. Conventual buildings, now converted into a vocational school and hotel-restaurant, testify to the adaptation of heritage to contemporary uses.

The "Devil Tower", built in the 15th century near the Abbey, reinforces the link between the monument and the local feudal history. Its location on the right bank of the Loire, in the UNESCO perimeter of the Loire Valley, underlines its cultural and historical importance in the region.
