Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Françay, classified as a Historical Monument, dates back to the 12th century and was initially dependent on Bourgmoyen Abbey. Its typical Romanesque architecture includes a unique vessel completed by a semicircular apse arched in cul-de-four. The entrance, framed by three-way pillars, is surmounted by capitals decorated with vegetal motifs and grimaçant masks, characteristic of medieval sculpture. A Romanesque portal, now protected by a 16th century porch, opens onto the southern façade, highlighting the superposition of the epochs in this building.

In the 16th century, the church underwent major changes: the nave was equipped with a panel, and two side chapels were added, reflecting the evolution of liturgical needs. Mural paintings, later rediscovered, date from the late Middle Ages and testify to the decorative richness of the building at this time. These elements, combined with the original structure, illustrate almost five centuries of local religious and architectural history.

The church, fully protected by a 2007 decree, belongs to the municipality of Françay. Its state of conservation and its precise location (4 Rue de l'Église) make it an accessible heritage, although the practical information on visits remains partially documented. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as very satisfactory, facilitating its identification in the Loir-et-Cher landscape.
