Origin and history
The Notre-Dame de Garigny church, listed as a Historical Monument, is a 12th century Romanesque building located in the village of Garigny, in the Cher department. Its arched portal, composed of three rows of ground harpsichords, is surmounted by a larval adorned with relief figures. These architectural details, typical of Romanesque art, bear witness to a remarkable craftsmanship for the time. The nave, covered with oak panels forming a cradle, is fixed on a robust frame, illustrating medieval wooden construction techniques.
The Romanesque sculpture also adorns the capitals of the nave and transept, representing biblical and symbolic scenes like Jonas spitted by the whale or characters facing a snake. These motifs, both decorative and didactic, reflect the importance of religious iconography in medieval art. The western gate of the church was classified in 1913, while the rest of the building, with the exception of this gate, was inscribed in 2015, highlighting its heritage value.
The church, owned by the commune of Garigny, is located at the approximate address of the 8 Route de Villequiers. Although its GPS location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), it remains a major point of interest for local heritage. The protected elements include not only the classified door, but also the entire building, with the exception of this door, as defined by the protection orders. No information is available on its current accessibility or possible tourist functions (visits, rentals, accommodation).
