Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Annunciation-et-Saint-Victor-Martyr d'Aubignan found its origins in the 11th century, as evidenced by historical sources. However, the present building dates mainly from the 18th century, after the collapse of the old church in 1729. This reconstruction marked an architectural break with the medieval past, while maintaining a central function in local religious life.
The octagonal bell tower, with a conical roof, is a remarkable element of the building. Destroyed during the French Revolution, it was rebuilt in 1845, illustrating the political upheavals and their impact on the heritage. The church is also distinguished by its north-south orientation, atypical for churches traditionally oriented eastward, probably due to its adoration with the old city walls.
Classified as a historic monument since July 21, 1970, the church is now owned by the municipality of Aubignan. Its inclusion in the inventory of historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The sources also mention its furniture and facade, although few precise details are available.
The location of the building, at the Nicolas Mignard driveway in the Vaucluse department, makes it a point of interest in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its history reflects architectural and social developments, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era, including revolutionary periods and 19th century restorations.
