Origin and history
Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativity church, located in the Ormes department of Yonne (89), is a historical monument built over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is distinguished by its atypical architectural plan with double apse, a peculiarity rare in Burgundy. The building retained its original 16th century state, while integrating furniture from the 17th and 19th centuries, such as the masonry high altar and the communion grid.
The church has been listed as a Historic Monument since March 2, 2015, a protection that covers the entire building, including its iconic furniture. This ranking highlights the originality of its plan and the quality of its interior decor. The building, well preserved, belongs to the commune of Ormes and is located Place de la Libération, in the heart of the village.
The monument reflects the importance of parish churches in Burgundy community life of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These buildings served not only as places of worship but also as gathering centres for the inhabitants, embodying both faith and social cohesion. Their architecture and furniture testify to local craftsmanship and stylistic influences of the time.
