Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame de Montaudin is a Catholic building located in the department of Mayenne, in the heart of the village of Montaudin, on the edge of the departmental road 31. It was erected on the foundations of an earlier church, combining 19th and 16th century architectural elements.
The current church was built in two phases: the nave and transept were raised in 1889, while the choir was completed in 1898. Its neo-Roman style dominates the ensemble, reflecting architectural trends of the time. The 1906 inventory, conducted in a controversial manner by the local receiver without witnesses and before the scheduled hour, marks a notable episode in his history.
The interior features remarkable heritage features, including a 1544 stained glass window depicting the Tree of Jesse, unique in Mayenne for this theme. This window would come from the Mansion of Futalia. The baptismal fonts, dated from the 14th century, consist of two octagonal vats supported by evasive columns, carved in a monolithic block.
The church thus illustrates both the medieval heritage, with its ancient fonts, and the reconstructions of the nineteenth century, while preserving artistic traces of the Renaissance. Its history also reflects the social tensions of the time, as evidenced by the 1906 inventory.
