Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame de Thézac, located in the Charente-Maritime department in New Aquitaine, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. From this first construction, the bedside, the transept, the Gothic chapels and a remarkable bell tower remain today, considered one of the best preserved of the Romanesque Saintong. The nave, destroyed during the wars of religion, bears witness to the historical upheavals in the region. A staircase allows access to a vaulted crypt ossuary of primitive d'ogives, rare element and characteristic of this monument.
The church bell tower, of square shape, is distinguished by its two floors in retreat, the upper one of which is openworked on its four sides, while the lower one has arcatures applied. Inside, vaults in cupolas on tubes, reinforced by prominent veins, reflect Romanesque architectural techniques. Classified as historical monuments since 11 July 1903, this church belongs to the commune of Thézac and remains a major testimony of the religious and architectural heritage of the region.
The crypt of Notre Dame Church, accessible by a small staircase, is covered by a primitive cross-section and has a stone bench around the space, about 50 centimetres from the ground. This development, along with the ossuary function of the crypt, underscores the funeral and symbolic importance of this place in the Middle Ages. The monument, a communal property, embodies both the Romanesque heritage of the Saintonge and the transformations that have taken place over the centuries, especially during the religious conflicts that marked the region.
