Old chatelas castle (vestiges): inscription by order of 27 August 1927
Origin and history
The Old Castle of Saint-Thome, also named chatelas, is a monument located in the commune of Saint-Thome, in Ardèche. This castle, whose origin might date back to the 12th century, has undergone many changes over the centuries, including an elevation in the 17th century. Although its precise history remains partially documented, its architecture reflects the successive evolutions of its occupants and the defensive or residential needs of the era.
The chatelas was listed as historic monuments by order of 27 August 1927, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The current remains, although partially restored in the 20th century, bear witness to its local importance. This type of monument, typical of medieval rural areas, often played a central role in the social and military organization of the surrounding territories, serving as a checkpoint or seigneurial residence.
