Halles (former): inscription by order of 24 May 1944
Origin and history
The former halls of Vatan, located in the Indre department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, date from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are among the rare examples of structural halls still preserved today, most of which were replaced in the late 19th century by iron, cast iron or concrete constructions. Their structure consists of three naves of three spans, with a central nave twice as wide as the lateral naves. The frame rests on wooden poles or stone pillars, arranged on the sides.
These halls were listed as a Historic Monument by order of May 24, 1944, recognizing their heritage value. Their architecture reflects the traditional construction techniques of the time, where wood played a central role in public buildings. They were initially intended to house markets and trade, a key role in the economic and social life of cities at that time.
The location of the halls is specified at 10 Place de la République, 36150 Vatan. Their conservation status and geographical location are considered very satisfactory (note of 8/10 for accuracy). Owned by the municipality, they could be open to visit or used for local events, although practical information is not detailed in available sources.
