Origin and history
The Pont Vieux de Saint-Affrique is a medieval stone work composed of three uneven broken arches, the largest of which spans the river Sorgue. Its batteries, equipped with beaks and avant-becs, reduce current resistance, while their peaks serve as refuges. This bridge, typical of the road architecture of the Middle Ages, illustrates the construction techniques of the time, adapted to hydraulic constraints and traffic requirements.
Mentioned for the first time in 1368 in historical sources, the bridge could have been built in the first half of the 14th century. He was the subject of attested repairs in 1418 and 1737, demonstrating his continuing importance to the local community. Its classification as historic monuments in 1886 underscores its heritage value, although its condition deteriorated in the 20th century, requiring discussions on its restoration.
In 1952, exchanges between the municipality of Saint-Affrique and the services of historic monuments revealed an advanced state of degradation, mainly due to vegetation. However, the authorities consider that the work is not urgent, but is limited to general weeding. Today, the bridge remains a symbol of the road heritage of Aveyron, freely accessible to pedestrians.
Architecturally, the Pont Vieux is distinguished by its spans on the back of donkeys and its arcade openings measuring 15,40 m, 21,50 m and 9,60 m respectively. The 3.40 m thick batteries support a structure designed to withstand the floods of the Sorgue. Its location on the rue du Pont Vieux, in the heart of Saint-Affrique, makes it a central element of the historic urban landscape.
