Origin and history

Ensérune is a major archaeological site located on a hill of Nissan-lez-Enserune (Herault, Occitanie), continuously occupied between the 6th century BC and the 1st century BC. This protohistoric village, which is known as the "oppidum" because of its strategic high position, was a cultural and commercial crossroads between the Elisyc (ibero-Languecian) populations, the Gauls (from -218), and the Romans after the foundation of Narbonne in -118. Its decline gradually occurred in the first century C.E., marking the end of a multi-year occupation.

The hill, made up of soft marine sediments from the Miocene, housed nearly 300 silos dug into the rock, originally interpreted as grain reserves. Recent research suggests, however, that a majority served as tanks during the last phase of the site (IIth–I centuries BC). These structures, with capacities ranging from 10,000 to 85,000 litres, illustrate the adaptation of the inhabitants to a particular geological environment, while revealing their mastery of storage techniques, essential for the survival of protohistoric communities.

The archaeological excavations, initiated in 1850 by numismates attracted by Iberian coins, were systematized with Abbé A. Ginieis (1843–60), who discovered an incineration cemetery. Félix Mouret (1915–1928) made the first methodical excavations, followed by the works of Jules Formigué (1937), who installed a collection of ceramics in a villa-museum still visible today. Other archaeologists, such as Jean Jannoray (1946–1958) or Martine Schwaller (1980-1990), deepened the knowledge of the site, revealing a necropolis, tombs with funerary furniture (fibules, loops), and Greek, Iberian and Campanian ceramics.

Ranked as a Historic Monument in 1935 and 1936, the oppidum of Ensérune is now managed by the National Monuments Centre and integrated into the Iron Age Europe network, alongside sites such as Bibracte (Burgundy) and Ullastret (Spain). The museum on site exhibits a rich collection of objects bearing witness to cultural exchanges in Gaul, while temporary exhibitions, such as "En route! The Domitian route from the Pyrenees to the Rhône" (until May 2024), highlight its heritage.

The site also offers an exceptional panorama of the Béziers and Narbonne plains, the Montady pond, and the Pyrenees. Close to the Canal du Midi (created in the 17th century), it is 8 km west of Béziers and 2.5 km from the village of Nissan-lez-Enserune, at the border of the municipalities of Colombiers, Montady and Poilhes. Its geological and historical environment makes it a key place to understand the dynamics of human occupation in Languedoc during Protohistory.
