Origin and history

The opidum de Châteauvieux is a monument located in the commune of Pionnat, New Aquitaine. This type of site, characteristic of the iron age, was generally used as a fortified site for Celtic populations. Oppidas were often political, economic and religious centres, playing a key role in the territorial organization of the Gaulish peoples.

In the New Aquitaine region, oppida were strategically established to control communication channels and natural resources. These sites reflect an organized society, with artisanal, agricultural and commercial activities. The opidum of Châteauvieux is part of this general context, although the specific details of its history and its use remain to be clarified through extensive archaeological studies.
