Origin and history

The town of Gesnes-le-Gandelin is a monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the Pays de la Loire region. Although its existence is attested, the available sources do not specify its construction period or detailed history. This type of site, usually associated with the Iron Age or the Gaulish period, often served as a fortified site for local populations, combining defensive, economic and social functions.

In the Pays de la Loire, as in other regions of France, the oppidas played a central role in the territorial organisation of the Celtic peoples. They were gathering points for trade, political decisions and protection against external threats. In the absence of specific information on this oppidum, its local importance can be inferred from its very nature, reflecting a structured and hierarchical human occupation.
