Origin and history
L'oppidum de la Fare is an archaeological site located in the commune of Saint-Andéol-de-Fourchades, in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument, dated the ages of bronze and iron (protohistoric period), bears witness to an ancient human occupation in this mountainous area of the Central Massif. Its strategic location, probably chosen for its natural defense, makes it a typical example of the Gallic oppida, although the details of its internal organization remain partially unknown.
The oppidum was classified as historic monuments by order of 11 August 1986, thus recognizing its heritage importance. This protection specifically concerns the remains of the oppidum, referenced under cadastre B 99. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) also mention its precise location near the so-called Soulage location, with a map accuracy deemed "very satisfactory" (note 8/10). However, no information is provided on any recent excavations or major discoveries associated with the site.
In the Bronze and Iron Age, oppidas played a central role in organizing protohistoric societies. These fortified sites served both as refuges, political, economic and religious centres for local populations. In the ardéchois context, marked by rugged relief and varied natural resources (metals, agricultural lands), oppidas such as Fare could control roads or production areas. Their study provides a better understanding of the settlement dynamics and cultural exchanges of this pivotal period before Romanization.
