Origin and history

The Oppidum du Châtelard is an archaeological site located in Jabreilles-les-Bordes, Haute-Vienne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This site, located at the Châtelard site, dates back to the second Iron Age, a period marked by the development of Celtic societies and the emergence of fortified places serving both as refuges and as territorial control centres.

The site played a strategic role in allowing the monitoring of the La Roche Pass, a potentially crucial passage, particularly in connection with the mining activity of the time. This type of oppidum reflects the defensive and economic organization of the Gaulish peoples, often located on heights to dominate communication axes and local resources.

Listed as historical monuments in 1984, the Châtelard's oppidum bears witness to the heritage importance of protohistoric remains in France. His study contributes to the understanding of regional dynamics during the second iron age, including trade and conflicts related to resource exploitation such as mines.

The available data do not specify architectural details or archaeological excavations at the site. However, its inscription among the historical monuments of Upper Vienna highlights its value for local and national history, integrated into databases such as Mérimée or the Digital Atlas of the Roman Empire.
