Oppidum de Mané-Coh-Castel (Case AD 36, 37; ZR 116, 117, 458) : inscription by order of 28 December 1972
Origin and history
The Oppidum of Mané-Coh-Castel is a barred spur located in the commune of Plouhinec, Morbihan, in the United Kingdom. This protohistoric site, typical of the Gallic fortifications, stands on the right bank of the ria d It occupies a natural promontory, now covered with a Breton coastal moor, and is on a private land, making its access restricted. Only a coastal path, which has a easement of passage, allows you to walk around without entering the property.
Dated from the Protohistory, the oppidum attests to a Gaulish occupation, although the details of this period remain little documented in the available sources. The site was listed as historic monuments by order of 28 December 1972, thus recognizing its archaeological and heritage importance. This protection applies specifically to cadastral plots AD 36, 37 and ZR 116, 117, 458, as indicated in the Merimée base.
The localization of the oppidum, in the immediate vicinity of the ria d'Etel, suggests a strategic role, probably linked to the control of the sea or land routes during the Protohistory. The site is part of a landscape characteristic of the coastal areas of Brittany, where the barred spurs often served as refuges or strong places for the Gaulish communities. Today, its state of conservation and its natural setting bear witness to it, albeit not accessible, from that time.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) underline the archaeological importance of the site, but do not provide details of any major excavations or discoveries. The approximate address, 29 Rue de la Montagne in Plouhinec, as well as the Insee code of the municipality (56169), confirm its anchoring in the Morbihan. The accuracy of its location is assessed as "very satisfactory" (note 8/10) on Monumentum, thanks to the GPS coordinates available.
