Origin and history

The Oppidum du Châtelard is a major archaeological site in Jabreilles-les-Bordes, Haute-Vienne department. Given the second age of iron, this monument bears witness to the human occupation and defensive strategies of the era. Its location at the so-called Châtelard gives it a dominant position, ideal for monitoring the surroundings, including the Col de La Roche, a potentially strategic passage.

The building was listed as historic monuments in 1984, recognizing its heritage importance. Although the sources do not specify the details of its use, its monitoring role suggests a link to local activities, such as mining, which could have justified securing this pass. Today, the site remains a key vestige to understand the territorial and military organization of this period.

The precise location of the oppidum in the municipality of Jabreilles-les-Bordes is documented in the Merimée bases and the Digital Atlas of the Roman Empire. The site, partially private and communal, illustrates the challenges of preserving ancient monuments. Its official registration in 1984 marks an important step in protecting the protohistoric heritage of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
