Origin and history

The Saint Joseph Oratory is a religious building located in Fugeret, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built in the 1st quarter of the 18th century, it is distinguished by its pyramidal stone structure, topped by a metallic cross. It is located at the end of the parapet upstream of the Fugeret bridge, on the left bank, and bears an engraved inscription: "HEAR GUARDIAN OF THE SAUVEUR BEFORE OUR PROTECTOR".

The oratory houses a molten statue of St Joseph holding the child Jesus, housed in a niche. Its architectural composition includes a bentier, a covering stone decorated with symmetrical motifs (pointed cups and flower stick), and a flattened pyramid crowned with five stone spheres, potentially symbolizing the cardinal points and heavenly Jerusalem. The whole, 450 cm high, was restored in the 20th century, as indicated by a cement plate.

Originally built in 1820 by Jacques Sauvan on the Fugeret bridge, the Oratory was included in the inventory of historical monuments on 3 February 1966. Owned by the department, it bears witness to the local religious heritage and its integration into the rural architectural landscape. The sources also mention its precise location: CD 908, on the Vaïre, with an Insee code associated with the commune (04090).
