Origin and history
The Oratory of the God of Mercy of Menotey is a religious building built in the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, located in the village of Menotey, in the Jura department (39). Ranked as a Historic Monument, it is distinguished by its statue of the God of Mercy, symbol of local devotion. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 19 November 1946 bears witness to its heritage importance, although its exact location (north of the village) remains approximate according to available sources.
The structure, owned by the municipality of Menotey, is part of a rural context marked by the late Renaissance, when the oratories played a central role in spiritual and community life. These buildings, often erected on the outskirts of villages, served as places of prayer, pilgrimage or stopover for travellers. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Catholic Church in the social and cultural organization of the Franche-Comté countryside, then under the influence of the Dukes of Burgundy and then integrated into the Kingdom of France.
Available data from the Merimée database and the Monumentum license specify its approximate address (12 Rue du Dieu de Pitié) and its state of conservation, assessed as satisfactory (note 7/10 for location). No information is provided on its current accessibility (visits, cultural use) or possible restoration work.
