Oratory of Ceignac, including the altar and its cross (cf. G 230): inscription by order of 24 October 1977

Origin and history

Ceignac Oratory is a religious building located in the village of Calmont-de-Plancatge, Aveyron, Occitanie region. Built in the 17th century, it is distinguished by its simple structure: a slate roof supported by four sandstone pillars. This type of oratory, typical of the French countryside, often served as a place of prayer or a stop for pilgrims and local inhabitants.

The oratory has been listed as historic monuments since October 24, 1977, recognizing its heritage value. It is associated with a road cross, a common element in the rural religious landscape of the time. The monument, owned by the municipality, also includes an altar and its cross, protected by the registration order. Its precise location, 287 Avenue de la Basilica in Calmont, is referenced in the Mérimée base.

In the 17th century, Aveyron, then part of the province of Rouergue, was marked by a rural and agricultural society. Oratories such as Ceignac played a central role in the spiritual life of communities, providing a space for recollection and devotion. These small buildings also reflected the importance of Catholicism in the social and cultural organization of the region, where religious practices rhythmized the daily lives of the inhabitants.
