Origin and history

The Orphanage de Montreuil is a former establishment founded in the 17th century, located in the city of Montreuil-sur-Mer, in the department of Pas-de-Calais. It is composed of a main building with a chapel, showing its social and religious use. Together, it illustrates the importance of charitable institutions in modern French cities, often supported by local communities or religious orders.

The chapel Saint-Simon and Saint-Jude, built in 1753, is a major architectural element of the site. It was listed as historic monuments on December 3, 1969, recognizing its heritage value. In 1970, the chapel temporarily housed the Roger Rodière Museum, before it was transferred in 2008 to the Saint-Walloy mansion. Today, the chapel remains a protected vestige of this historical complex.

The Orphanage and the Orphanage reflect the urban and social dynamics of Montreuil-sur-Mer, a city marked by its medieval past and its role in the region. The precise location of the site, at 1 bis rue du Clape-en-Bas, as well as its partial inscription to the heritage, underline its anchoring in the local historical fabric. The property is now managed by an association, ensuring its preservation and openness to the public as far as possible.
