Origin and history

The Sisteron Hospital is a hospital built in the early eighteenth century, more precisely during its first quarter. Located in the municipality of Sisteron, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, it is part of the architectural landscape of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This building, still present avenue de la Libération, was partially protected by an inscription as historical monuments in 1989, covering notably its facades, roofs and chapel.

The hospital reflects the health and social organization of the modern era in Provence, where care facilities played a central role in the care of local populations. At that time, hospitals were often run by religious communities or municipalities, providing limited but essential medical services in a context where epidemics and precarious living conditions were common. These institutions also served as shelter for the poorest, illustrating a form of collective solidarity.

The registration of Sisteron Hospital as a historic monument in 1989 underscores its heritage importance. The protected elements include the facades and roofs of the two L-shaped wings, as well as the chapel, all located along the Avenue de la Libération.
