Origin and history

Jouaville is a historic monument located in the commune of Jouaville, in Meurthe-et-Moselle, in the Grand Est region. This site, classified as "old ossuary", was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by a decree of 23 November 1987. It is now owned by the municipality, although its exact origin and construction period remain undocumented in available sources.

The location of the lossuaire at 10 Rue Joliot Curie in Jouaville is estimated with an accuracy considered "a priori satisfactory" (note of 6/10). This type of monument, often linked to funeral or memorial contexts, could be used to group human remains into periods marked by specific conflicts, epidemics or religious practices. In rural areas such as Lorraine, ossuaries sometimes played a role in the management of burials and collective memory, although the particulars of Jouaville's are not specified.
