Ossuary (former): Order of 18 December 1990
Origin and history
The Ossuary of Niederstinzel is a funerary monument built in the early eighteenth century, more precisely in the first quarter of this century. Located in the town of Niederstinzel, Moselle (Department 57), it is now classified as Historic Monuments. Its official classification was carried out by ministerial decree on 18 December 1990, thus protecting a local architectural and memorial heritage.
This type of building, typical of rural areas, was used to welcome the bones exhumed from cemeteries to free space, while maintaining a sacred and commemorative dimension. In the context of the Great East, and more broadly Lorraine, the ossuary reflects the funeral and religious practices of the village communities of the modern era. Their presence also demonstrates the importance attached to the management of burials in societies where death was central.
The ossuary of Niederstinzel, owned by the municipality, is located at the approximate address of 5 Rue du Presbytère. Although its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed in the sources, its classification attests to its heritage value. The accuracy of its geographic location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10), suggesting a possible but perfectable identification in official databases.
