Origin and history

The old house of Calas, classified as a Historic Monument, is a Toulouse building with an initial structure dating back to the 15th century. Although some Gothic elements remain, the building has undergone major transformations over the centuries, including a complete reclothing in the 19th century. The facade on the street, apparently built in wooden panels, contrasts with more recent additions such as ionic pilasters and window frames, after the time when the Calas family occupied the place. These changes reflect the architectural evolutions and aesthetic tastes of successive epochs, while partially erasing the original medieval traces.

At the back of the courtyard, partially masked by a 19th century space, stands a remarkable stone gate. Its braided lintel, decorated with wooden vantals pierced with judas, is one of the few elements that retain a marked historical character. This portal, typical of the monumental entrances of the medieval era, offers a striking contrast with subsequent additions, thus illustrating the superposition of architectural styles. The inclusion of the house in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1980 helped to preserve this heritage, although its present state reflects more the 19th century interventions than its original aspect.

The location of the house at 50 rue des Filatiers in Toulouse makes it an integral part of the city's historic urban fabric. Its address, specified in the Merimée database, and its Insee code (31555) place it in the department of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as "a priori satisfactory", which facilitates its identification in the Toulouse landscape. Despite the transformations, Calas House remains a symbol of local history, linked to significant events whose source text does not specify details.
