Origin and history
The Justice Palace of Espalion, nicknamed the Old Palace, is an emblematic building built in 1572 at the initiative of the governor of the city. Located on the left bank of the Lot, near Pont Vieux, it incorporates two defensive towers designed to protect Espalion. Its Renaissance-style architecture is distinguished by sill windows and two turrets, one of which is in river-side corbellation. Originally designed as a common house, the building became a court during the French Revolution, while its basement was used as a prison.
Ranked a historical monument by decree of 4 November 1911, the Old Palace changed its vocation in the 20th century: it was transformed into a residence of artists in 1992, under the property of the commune. Its strategic location, upstream of the Old Bridge, and its proximity to the statue of the scaphandrier on the opposite bank – a tribute to the local invention of the scapandre – make it a place full of history and symbols.
The building illustrates the evolution of civic usages in Rouergue, moving from a defensive and judicial role to a cultural function. Its ranking among the historical monuments protected in 1911 underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its anchoring in the social and urban history of Espalion.
