Origin and history
Toulouse's courthouse, located between the Place du Salin and the Jules-Guesde aisles, is an architectural complex dating back to the Middle Ages. Between 1469 and 1492, parliamentarians had the Grand Chamber (now First Chamber of the Court of Appeal), followed by the Golden Chamber (1470-1505) and the Hercules Chamber (1691). These constructions reflect the evolution of judicial needs and the growing influence of the Toulouse Parliament, the key institution of the Ancien Régime in south-western France.
In the 19th century, the palace underwent major transformations under the direction of architect Jean-Pierre Laffon (1824-1833), who restructured the old palace and added neoclassical facades on the courtyard of honour. The Court of Assises was set up in the east, while in 1845 the Court of First Instance was built. In 1859-1860, the architect Esquié completely rebuilt the Court of Assises. This work marks the adaptation of the building to post-revolutionary judicial reforms and centralization of the state.
Part of the palace, including the First Grand Chamber with its chapel, the Salon Doré, the Salon d'Hercules and the vestibule of the Third Chamber (decorated by 15th century paintings), is classified as a historical monument in 1999. Other elements, such as the façades on Salin Square and the remains of the medieval ramparts, have been listed since 1994. The contemporary extension, completed in 2008 by Pascal Prunet, incorporates these legacies while modernising the judicial spaces.
Today, the palace houses the judicial court, the assize court of the Haute-Garonne, the appellate court and the juvenile court. Access is facilitated by the Palais-de-Justice metro station (line B) and the tramway (line T1). The building thus embodies almost six centuries of judicial history, combining medieval heritage, Haussmannian transformations and contemporary architecture.
