Origin and history

The Palais des Comtes de Provence, located in Brignoles in the Var, is a medieval building built in the 13th century. This monument, classified as a Historical Monument, illustrates the political and architectural importance of the region under the authority of the Counts of Provence. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments, initially in 1987 and then modified in 2024, covers the entire palace, including cadastral plots 950 and 951. Today, it belongs to the municipality of Brignoles and houses elements related to the museum of the Brignolais country, highlighting its contemporary cultural role.

The location of the palace, at 18 Rue Saint-Joseph, is documented in the Mérimée base, with geographical accuracy considered to be satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). Available sources, such as Monumentum, confirm its status as a communal property and its association with a museum labeled Museum of France. Although architectural details are not explicitly described in the sources, its recent listing (2024) suggests a renewed recognition of its heritage value.

The palace is part of a historical context marked by Comtal power in Provence in the Middle Ages. The Counts of Provence, central figures of regional feudalism, used such buildings as places of residence and exercise of power. Brignoles, a strategic city of Var, then enjoyed a key position between coastal and hinterland areas, promoting economic and political exchange. This type of palace also reflected the social dynamics of the time, where the local nobility played a major role in the administration and defence of the territory.

Future

Today it houses the Museum of the Brignolais Country, created in 1945 by André Jaubert.
